Activity 1: Introduction

In this module, you will be introduced to the medium of music. You will know the different forms of music, its uses to the artist, the listener, and society, and also the basic elements of music and how works are created. As a part of this first activity in this module, you will be asked to simply listen to every piece of music you hear and are directed to study. Becoming a good listener is the first step towards understanding and appreciating music. Most people use music in the background for other activities. Listening to music is an art, and like all the arts requires preparation, knowledge of vocabulary, and discipline. For a full understanding of music as an art form, it is necessary to focus your attention on what you are hearing, recognize specific instances, and relate these instances to other pieces of music over a broad range of styles. Throughout this Module, you will be introduced to terms, vocabulary, and activities that will help you accomplish this goal.
