Activity 1: Introduction

Have you ever wondered what benefit the arts provide the artist and viewer alike? What role does creativity play in everyday life? What are the purposes of art in society? Art has many functions and purposes to both the individual artist, the viewer and to the community as a whole. In this module you will look at the purpose and function of art and be able to recognize these concepts as they apply to works of art. After finishing this module, you should be able to understand:
  • What is a work of Art?
  • Purposes of art
  • Functions of art
  • Role an artist can play in society
  • Perception of art and response to art

Break down the topics above onto separate pages in your notebook and begin to give at least four specific answers to each. This will provide you with a way to quiz yourself as your work your way through this domain of study.
