Activity 4: Learning Activities

Candid Evaluation

    You have a patient coming to see you today that you have not previously met. The patient sent in a diary of everything she had eaten in the last 3 days and the following anthropometric data: 

    • Age: 33
    • Height: 5’4”
    • Weight: 161 lbs

    After analyzing her diet you see that she eats an average of 2440 kcal per day with 26% protein, 42% carbohydrate, and 32% fat. 

    • Based on this information alone, what would you consider talking to her about today?
    • Based on this limited amount of information, are there any potential health issues that should be addressed?
    • What additional information would you want to ask her?

Diet Analysis

    There are a variety of methods used to access dietary adequacy. You have experimented with one method on the MyPyramid Tracker site. Other methods used in patient care are:

    • 24 hour recall
    • Food frequency questionnaire
    • 3 day diet record
    • Calorie counts

    Using your book and the internet, define each of the terms above along with their strengths and weaknesses.

Diet Therapy and Recommendations

    Depending on the patient’s state of health, various methods of nutrition therapy may be indicated.

    • Enteral nutrition: including oral and tube feedings
    • Parenteral nutrition: including peripheral and central line feedings.

    Using your book, define the terms above and indicate protocol for use of each method.

    Tube feeding and/or IV feedings can be troublesome for some patients. How would you go about educating the patient on the importance of good nutrition during their recovery?

    Specific types of diet prescriptions indicated for certain disease states will be discussed within courses where those diseases are covered (e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, liver disease, etc.).

Cultural consideration:

    Briefly review the Cultural Dietary Patterns and Religious Dietary Practices appendix in the back of your book.
    • How do these preferences and/or restrictions alter dietary habits and recommendations?
    • How can a health care provider be sensitive to cultural and religious preference?
