Activity 4: Learning Activities

Family Activity

Question members of your family to see if any of the digestive problems listed in the barriers of digestion section are common (lactose intolerance, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, Gastroesophageal reflux, and Gastroesophageal reflux disease).

Note symptoms and age of onset.

From the resources noted above and others that you find, create a list of recommendations to help alleviate symptoms. (Pay special attention to nutrient needs if any food groups are eliminated (e.g., where to get calcium in the absence of dairy foods?).

Digestion Mapping Activity

    Digestion Map

Follow the digestive process of a peanut butter and banana sandwich at: www.mc.maricopa.edu/~lauramay/Digestion/mainpage.html

Using the diet analysis software at www.mypyramidtracker.gov/ analyze your diet for nutrient composition.

Does your meal meet the dietary guideline recommendations?
