Activity 5:  Guiding Questions and Competence Builder

Answer the following questions using information gained through the readings, Thinkwell, CourseCompass, and websites.  Enter answers and thoughts on the topics in your notebook.

  1. List and describe the evidence for continental drift, and explain why this theory was not accepted by geologists.
  2. Explain plate tectonics and describe the forces that drive the plates.
  3. Why are earthquakes and volcanoes commonly found at plate boundaries?
  4. Draw and label the structure of the earth; explain the composition of the plates and how they move.
  5. How is a rock different than a mineral?
  6. Explain the processes that act on a rock as it passes through the rock cycle.
  7. How does the work of water, gravity, wind and glaciers change the surface of the land?
