Activity 1: Introduction

You are now ready to determine a particular organization and tone for presenting your thesis statement along with the rest of the research paper which supports it. Remember that the purpose of most reports is to inform and explain.  Because of this, the writer tries to sound objective, and therefore unbiased, in the presentation of information.   Also, in reports, the data is often presented before the main claims of the writer, so the reader can conclude that the thesis or conclusion has been derived from the data.  However, reports often introduce the thesis statement in the introduction, but reserve a full discussion of the thesis for after the data has been introduced.  This way the introduction helps the reader predict what will follow, but doesn’t fully elaborate on the main idea until after the data is presented.
