This module will assist you in selecting and gaining comfort in using a basic four-operation calculator.  There are tips on things to look for in selecting a calculator; however any basic, non-programmable scientific calculator will be sufficient.

Activity 1 : : Activity 2 : : Activity 3

Activity 1:  Choosing a Calculator

  • Important functions
    • Key size
    • Screen size and resolution

*Make sure to select a calculator that will perform the basic operations:  addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  Being able to see and easily press the keys on the calculator is very important.

  • Comfort/User friendly
    • Easy-to-read manual
    • Keys clearly marked

You should spend some time testing the calculator with basic operations.  Some calculators are programmed with the order of operations.  With others, it is necessary to input the number and then press the desired function key.  Make sure that you fully understand the workings of the calculator you choose.
