Activity 2: Key Strokes
- Basic Operations of a Four Function Calculator (+, -, x, รท)
- Special Operations (These are helpful, but not required.)
- Fraction Key
- Exponent Key
Avoid the pitfall of using a calculator for every computation. You need to recognize when to use order of operations to make a problem easy to do in your head. Keep in mind that you don't have to do mathematical expressions always from left to right. For instance:
15.50 - 13.22 - 6.78
You can easily do this in your head if you add the two negative numbers first, and then subtract.
= 15.50 - 20.00
= - 4.50
Remember order of operations state that addition and subtraction have the same order so you do not need to go left to right. Thus, no calculator is needed on this one, because you can easily do it in your head.
