Activity 6: Taskstream Task
Now that you have completed module 4 you are ready to do Task 1 of the IEA4. Go to www.Taskstream.com to complete this task.
- Complete Task 1 in the IEA4.
- Read the instructions for the task and view the rubric. By viewing the rubric ahead of time you know exactly what the graders are looking for.
- Create an outline of how you will approach the writing. The task is asking for a FOUR-PAGE ESSAY.
- Gather your notes from the readings and any other resources that you find.
- Be sure to use in-text citations and a reference list for the essay.
Students who are successful on the performance tasks generally exhibit similar qualities. These students fully engage in the aligned learning resources and work through the Guided Learning Tool before beginning work on assessment tasks. Carefully reading the task directions, making note of each section will help students develop an understanding of the task requirements. Reviewing the task rubric further helps students understand task essentials. Students report that developing an outline or graphic organizer is often helpful as they begin working on specific tasks. Additionally, it is suggested that students review tasks upon completion for inclusion of all required elements, proofreading for any mechanical errors, and proper citation of all sources is essential prior to submitting for grading.
Additional clarifications for IEA4 Task 1:
- Note that the instructions ask you to tackle three different, but closely related tasks in your essay.
- You are first asked to outline the areas of “social change” introduced by the Renaissance. Based on your study of Module 4, what kind of changes occurred in the general structure of European societies? What changes occurred in European life in general? Here you might expand your definition of social change to include some of the major developments brought about by the Renaissance in science, technology, art, education, religion, philosophy, government, economy, or other areas. Highlight the areas of social change that you think were most significant. Your explanation of social change should reflect your own careful analysis of Module 4.
- You are then asked to explain how at least two American institutions have been influenced or shaped by Renaissance developments. Keep in mind that an institution, in this case, is not necessarily a physical structure or organizational body. Rather, it might be a widespread cultural or social practice, a political or economic system, or a significant form of social relations, among many other things. (Think about, for examples, modern education, commerce, or the relationship of church and state). It is crucial that you clarify the historical connections between the two (or more) modern institutions that you choose and Renaissance developments.
- Finally, you are asked to explain at least four specific examples of connections between modern American institutions and the social changes brought about by the Renaissance. Depending upon the areas of social change and the modern institutions that you have chosen to emphasize, you might look at specific historical events, or organizations, movements, inventions, pieces of art, books, etc.
- Overall, the goal is to write a paper held together by your own well-founded, logical ideas about the relationship of the Renaissance to modernity. In doing so, it is important that you follow the guidelines of the rubric available in Taskstream and that you carefully proofread your paper. Make sure your writing clearly reflects the ideas that you mean to convey.
