Activity 3:  Readings

The following materials will be of help to you as you study these topics.

  • Read chapter 1 in American Destiny; Carnes and Garraty, 2006.  This chapter offers information on the early European explorers, the indigenous populations and early settlements in America. 
    • Pay close attention to the maps and/or graphs on pp. 19 and 35, as well as the information on p. 46.
  • Read chapters 1 and 2 in A Short History of the American Nation, Carnes and Garraty. You can find these chapters in the e-reserves of the WGU library.  These chapters provide further information on the discovery of the new world, indigenous populations and American society prior to the American Revolution.
    • Pay attention to the maps and/or graphs on pgs. 5, 8 and the milestones on p. 29.
  • Log onto Thinkwell, and read:
    • Thinkwell Program: Section 1.1.1 – North American and South American Native Cultures.
    • Thinkwell Program:  Section 1.1.2 – European Exploration, Conflict and Colonization.
    • Thinkwell Program: Section 1.1.3 – The English Colonial Period
