Activity 1: Introduction

Have you ever wondered how major events in the twentieth century shaped the way Americans view themselves today?  What were the reasons behind the First World War, the Great Depression, and the Second World War?  How were they inter-related?  Why were their consequences so wide-reaching and long-lasting?  What events defined the Cold War that followed WWII?  Why did the Cold War succeed as an international system, and what brought about its eventual collapse?  How do the events of the twentieth century continue to influence the policies and identity of the United States?
