These readings provide information for early American society (political, social, and cultural developments), the economic growth of America (including slavery), the growing rift between the North and the South, and the events leading up to the Civil War.
- Chapter 12: “Institutional Reform” (pages 234-239)
- Chapter 14: “The Sectional Crisis” (pages 265-285)
- Chapter 15: “Secession and the Civil War” (pages 286-307)
- Chapter 16: “The Agony of Reconstruction” (pages 309-328)
- Pay close attention to the maps on page 271 and 288
