Activity 2: Key Questions and Concepts
- What strategies do adult readers use to understand written text?
- How do readers determine the main idea(s) as they read?
- How do readers recognize important details which support the main idea?
- How do readers determine the intended meaning of unfamiliar words, specialized language or multiple meaning words?
(NOTE: “Main idea” refers to both the topic and the writer’s main observation about the topic. For example, global warming is a topic, but a main idea might be, global warming will eventually erode the coastlines of every continent which will affect where many people will be able to live. “Specialized language” refers to the precise terms or words a particular profession or group uses to discuss their specific domain.)
