In this module you will be organizing your learning tools to prepare for study in this domain. Learning tools include: Creating Domain Notebooks, Obtaining Learning Resources, and Referring Assessments.

Activity 1: Creation of Study Notebook

Begin a notebook or digital file for your domain of study. Use organizers to separate your work. Suggested divisions include:

  • A personalized Dictionary of Terms - This is a place to enter terms that are new to you or which you have only partial understanding.
Reading and Writing Tips – You may want to keep a list of useful strategies for academic writing and reading. These entries might consist of reminders plus examples. In regard to writing, think about rhetorical, grammatical or mechanical concerns. For reading, it might be something like suggestions for remembering what you read, how to better comprehend difficult text, or how to evaluate what you read. This section is a personalized strategy and style guide.
  • Double Entry – This is a place to quote from your reading, and then to add your comments. It could also be a place to include the focus questions from this study guide, along with the answers you found in the reading and websites. You might also want to summarize the main ideas from your reading and then evaluate their usefulness to you. You could also give your initial impression of an idea and then follow up later with comments made after reflection. In each case, there are two interrelated entries, thus the double entry title.
