• Add bacteria to your concept map. Make links to shape, behavior, diseases and add this information.

• How are diseases classified?
• Based on what you know from your investigation about of the bacteria responsible for the outbreaks, determine how the outbreak could spread within individuals and communities.
• How and why do nosocomial infections occur?
• What might be done to decrease your risk of such an infection?

Read Outbreak cases 5, 6, 8, and 15 along with the reference material for each starting on p. 33.

• Answer the questions at the end of each case. What bacteria are responsible for each of the illnesses?
• In the reference material for each case it uses terms like “Reservoir” “Mode of Transmission” “Vector” “Host” “Portal”
• Investigate what each of these mean.
• Are they the same for each of the cases? Why or why not?
• Are there common types of host or reservoirs for specific bacteria?
• What are common portals of entry and exit for bacteria in the human body? 

Read Outbreak cases 17, 23, and the reference material related to each case beginning on p. 73.

Read Outbreak cases 82, 79, and the reference material related to each case beginning on p. 258.

• What type of bacteria are the cause of the illness described in each outbreak?
• What was the reservoir? The mode of transmission?
• What diagnostic test was used to identify the bacteria?
