Types and Characteristics of Microorganisms

  • Work through chapters 1, 3, and 9 to get an overview of the types and characteristics of microorganisms.
  • Pay particular attention to sizes of microorganisms. 
  • Make a drawing to depict the sizes of different microorganisms. 
  • Why is a system of classifying microorganisms important? Could new categories be added? How? Why?
  • What is the Germ Theory? Who suggested it and what events in history stimulated the investigation that led to the Germ Theory? 
Chemical Metabolism in Bacteria
  • Read chapter 5
  • How is energy stored in bacteria?  What is this energy needed for?
  • Describe the types of chemical reactions that take place to produce large molecules.

Osmosis

  • Read pp. 75-76
  • Describe the difference between Active and Passive Transport in bacteria.
  • Make drawings to show how the two work.
