Activity 2:  Learning Resources

Microbiology: A Laboratory Experience for Independent Study Courses

  • Read the lab manual introductions and safety section (pp. 4-42)

Lab Manual - Introduction

  • Open the online lab manual for microbiology.  Thoroughly read and review the introduction. This provides valuable information you will need to learn from and complete the microbiology labs.
  • Also note the time suggested for completing each lab so that you can pace yourself. Note that some labs are completed over several days to allow microorganisms to grow. You will need to plan ahead for this now.  Look ahead at the first few labs, make a list of what you will need to obtain, and either find or purchase it now.
  •  Then review the laboratory notes and Laboratory Drawings. This is important as it will prepare you to complete the laboratory reports you will submit in Taskstream.

  • Finally, review the Laboratory Supplies information. While most supplies come with your LabPaq kit, some consumables commonly found in the home do not and must be obtained by the student. Again – Plan ahead.

Lab Manual - Introduction to Microscopy

  • Go to the online lab manual and access information on microscopy, review how to use, handle, and store your microscope. This is a sensitive piece of equipment and should be handled carefully.

  • Be sure you understand magnification, resolution, refraction, numerical aperture, type used to view viruses.

Lab Manual - Safety in the Lab

  • Go to the online lab manual and review all information supplied on Basic Safety, and Microbiology Safety
  • Fill out and sign the Micro-Scale Safety page. Download and save to your computer. When you complete the first lab in Taskstream, attach the signed safety contract.
